Craigslist Rent Scam — Disappears After Taking Deposit
Date of Experience: February 4, 2026Communication Channel: KakaoTalk
I contacted a landlord after seeing a listing on Craigslist for a 1BR unit priced at $1,200/month near Burnaby Metrotown. They showed me the interior and asked me to send a $600 deposit via e-Transfer; however, they stopped responding after I made the payment. I later found out that the unit was already occupied by someone else. Be sure to be suspicious of listings that are too cheap or request an upfront e-Transfer. Visit the property in person to verify the landlord's identity, and do not send money without a contract.
